How to tell whether a hard disk has been used previously – distinguish between factory new and refurbished?
Is there any way to tell whether a given hard disk is straight from the factory or has been used previously (a refurbished one)? Assume the seller has performed sanitization operations on the hard disk, so that you can’t check and recover any data from it to indicate previous use. Is there some way, by checking the data pattern in the disk, or some other parameter, so that you are able to say with confidence that a given hard disk is spanking new, and has not been used previously on a PC.
Well use some sector analysis tools and see if the disk has been zeroed out or has a random bit pattern applied.
You could also look at the manufacture date on the disk; but aside from that it’s pretty tough even with forensic tools if he’s used something like DBAN on the disk, or a degausser.
